Background
Depression and anxiety are common and highly comorbid, and their comorbidity is associated with poorer outcomes posing clinical and public health concerns. We evaluated the polygenic contribution to comorbid depression and anxiety, and to each in isolation.
MethodsDiagnostic codes were extracted from electronic health records for four biobanks [N = 177 865 including 138 632 European (77.9%), 25 612 African (14.4%), and 13 621 Hispanic (7.7%) ancestry participants]. The outcome was a four-level variable representing the depression/anxiety diagnosis group: neither, depression-only, anxiety-only, and comorbid. Multinomial regression was used to test for association of depression and anxiety polygenic risk scores (PRSs) with the outcome while adjusting for principal components of ancestry.
ResultsIn total, 132 960 patients had neither diagnosis (74.8%), 16 092 depression-only (9.0%), 13 098 anxiety-only (7.4%), and 16 584 comorbid (9.3%). In the European meta-analysis across biobanks, both PRSs were higher in each diagnosis group compared to controls. Notably, depression-PRS (OR 1.20 per s.d. increase in PRS; 95% CI 1.18–1.23) and anxiety-PRS (OR 1.07; 95% CI 1.05–1.09) had the largest effect when the comorbid group was compared with controls. Furthermore, the depression-PRS was significantly higher in the comorbid group than the depression-only group (OR 1.09; 95% CI 1.06–1.12) and the anxiety-only group (OR 1.15; 95% CI 1.11–1.19) and was significantly higher in the depression-only group than the anxiety-only group (OR 1.06; 95% CI 1.02–1.09), showing a genetic risk gradient across the conditions and the comorbidity.
ConclusionsThis study suggests that depression and anxiety have partially independent genetic liabilities and the genetic vulnerabilities to depression and anxiety make distinct contributions to comorbid depression and anxiety.

We analyse the near-rolling motion of non-wetting droplets down a gently inclined plane. Inspired by the scaling analysis of Mahadevan & Pomeau (Phys. Fluids, vol. 11, 1999, pp. 2449–2453), we focus upon the limit of small Bond numbers, where the drop shape is nearly spherical and the internal flow is approximately a rigid-body rotation except close to the flat spot at the base of the drop. In that region, where the fluid interface appears flat, we obtain an analytical approximation for the flow field. By evaluating the dissipation associated with that flow we obtain a closed-form approximation for the drop speed. This approximation reveals that the missing prefactor in the Mahadevan–Pomeau scaling law is $(3{\rm \pi} /16)\sqrt {3/2}\approx 0.72$ – in good agreement with experiments. An unexpected feature of the flow field is that it happens to satisfy the no-slip and shear-free conditions simultaneously over both the solid flat spot and the mobile fluid interface in its vicinity. Furthermore, we show that close to the near-circular contact line the velocity field lies primarily in the plane locally normal to the contact line; it is analogous there to the local solution in the comparable problem of a two-dimensional rolling drop. This analogy breaks down near the two points where the contact line propagates parallel to itself, the local flow being there genuinely three dimensional. These observations illuminate a unique ‘peeling’ mechanism by which a rolling droplet avoids the familiar non-integrable stress singularity at a moving contact line.

We examine the dynamics of a semi-infinite vortex sheet attached not to a semi-infinite plate but instead to a rigid right-angled wedge, with the sheet aligned along one of its edges. Our approach to this problem, which was suggested by David Crighton, accords well with the fundamental ethos of Crighton’s work, which was characterized by ‘the application of rigorous mathematical approximations to fluid mechanical idealizations of practically relevant problems’ (Ffowcs Williams, Annu. Rev. Fluid Mech., vol. 34, 2002, pp. 37–49). The resulting linearised unsteady potential flow is forced by an oscillatory dipole in the uniform stream passing along the top of the wedge, while there is stagnant fluid in the remaining quadrant. Spatial instability is considered according to well-established methods: causality is enforced by allowing the frequency to become temporarily complex. The essentially quadrant-type geometry replaces the usual Wiener–Hopf technique by the Mellin transform. The core difficulty is that a first-order difference equation of period 4 requires a solution of period unity. As a result, the complex fourth roots $(\pm 1\pm \text{i})$ of $-4$ appear in the complementary function. The Helmholtz instability wave is excited and requires careful handling to obtain explicit results for the amplitude of the instability wave.

The anisotropy created by stratification and or rotation places restrictions, severe if viscosity is present, on the construction of analytic solutions to wave generation and scattering problems. Consequently, much literature is devoted to frequency space and so careful consideration of oscillatory motion generated from rest is advisable. Moreover, the use of complex coordinates in the inviscid case has been incompletely presented. The detailed inversion of the Fourier time transform for a breathing or heaving sphere demonstrates an expanded, perhaps more crucial, role for the complex coordinates and shows that the known phase changes in the energy propagation regions are present throughout the St Andrew’s cross that circumscribes the sphere. However, the different solution structure for the heaving disk requires and allows a more direct calculation. Though the inclusion of rotation does not affect the dynamics, it enables the significance of their relative magnitude to be identified and reference to rotation only results achieved.

Marangoni propulsion is a form of locomotion wherein an asymmetric release of surfactant by a body located at the surface of a liquid leads to its directed motion. We present in this paper a mathematical model for Marangoni propulsion in the viscous regime. We consider the case of a thin rigid circular disk placed at the surface of a viscous fluid and whose perimeter has a prescribed concentration of an insoluble surfactant, to which the rest of its surface is impenetrable. Assuming a linearized equation of state between surface tension and surfactant concentration, we derive analytically the surfactant, velocity and pressure fields in the asymptotic limit of low capillary, Péclet and Reynolds numbers. We then exploit these results to calculate the Marangoni propulsion speed of the disk. Neglecting the stress contribution from Marangoni flows is seen to over-predict the propulsion speed by 50 %.

A fluid droplet located on a superhydrophobic surface makes contact with the surface only at small isolated regions, and is mostly in contact with the surrounding air. As a result, a fluid in motion near such a surface experiences very low friction, and superhydrophobic surfaces display strong drag reduction in the laminar regime. Here we consider theoretically a superhydrophobic surface composed of circular posts (so-called fakir geometry) located on a planar rectangular lattice. Using a superposition of point forces with suitably spatially dependent strength, we derive the effective surface-slip length for a planar shear flow on such a fakir-like surface as the solution to an infinite series of linear equations. In the asymptotic limit of small surface coverage by the posts, the series can be interpreted as Riemann sums, and the slip length can be obtained analytically. For posts on a square lattice, our analytical prediction of the dimensionless slip length, in the low surface coverage limit, is in excellent quantitative agreement with previous numerical computations.

Summary
This volume is dedicated to the memory of John G. Harris, whose life ended prematurely on the 6th of May, 2006. John's friendship and research impacted many people – he was a dedicated and loving husband, an accomplished scientist and applied mathematician, a passionate teacher, and an important mentor to many young scientists. This book was originally intended to be John's second book on elastic wave theory and diffraction. It grew from four lectures that were given at the Department of Mathematics and Mechanics, within IIMAS, at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in January 2004. After John's passing, several of his colleagues, inspired by his wife Beatriz, began to convert these unfinished notes into a form suitable for publication. We have worked to combine the existing chapters with additional, contributed chapters from experts in the field of elastic wave theory.
Born and raised in Toronto, John entered McGill University as a mature student and graduated with a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering (Honours). After receiving a Masters of Science in Applied Physics from Stanford University, John traveled to Northwestern University to work toward a doctorate in Applied Mathematics with Jan Achenbach, which he completed in 1979. J. D. Achenbach had a lasting impact on John's work in elastic wave scattering, which formed the basis of much of John's research as a professor at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign between 1979 and 2005.

A complete solution is obtained for the wave field generated by the time-harmonic edgewise oscillations of a horizontal circular disk in an incompressible stratified viscous fluid. The linearized equations of viscous internal waves and the no-slip condition on the rigid disk are used to derive sets of dual integral equations for the fluid velocity and vorticity. The dual integral equations are solved by analytic reduction to sets of linear algebraic equations. Asymptotic results confirm that this edgewise motion no longer excites waves in the small-viscosity limit. Broadside oscillations and the effect of density diffusion are also considered.

A few decades ago, the significance of Moffatt vortices was demonstrated by establishing their existence in various flows. Wedge and cusp regions and their axisymmetric counterparts were preferred to conical regions because the associated analyses were simpler. The lowest even and odd modes were always dominant and the streamline patterns of higher modes were assumed to be similarly simple, especially as their minute strength caused computational difficulties. Here, armed with far more computer power, we return to the vortices' canonical structure, with our principal focus on the region exterior to two cones with common axis and vertex. Many interesting features are revealed, the most unexpected being the structure of the third (second odd in a symmetric geometry) mode. The two-cone geometry allows consideration of asymmetric regions, for the first time. Comparisons are made with the well-known wedge and single-cone results and numerical corrections made to the latter. In all cases, eigenvalue plots play a valuable role in guiding the discussion.

A range of “single source” Sr-Nb and Sr-Ta heterometal alkoxides precursors are investigated as potential sources for liquid injection MOCVD (metalorganic chemical vapour deposition) and ALD (atomic layer deposition) of SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) and SrBi2(TxNb1-x)2O9 (SBTN). These “single source” precursors are designed to alleviate the mis-match between conventional Sr and Ta or Sr and Nb sources. Strontium-tantalate and strontium-niobate thin films were deposited on silicon using the “single source” alkoxide precursors [Sr{Ta(OEt)5(dmae}2] and [Sr{Nb(OEt)5(dmae)}2] (dmae = OCH2CH2NMe2), and the optimum temperatures for deposition of stoichiometric SrTa2O6 and SrNb2O6 were determined. Separate ALD studies of [Sr{Ta(OEt)5(dmae)}2] and [Sr{Ta(OEt)5(mee)}2] (mee = OCH2CH2OMe) for the growth of strontium-tantalate were carried out to assess precursor suitability for this technique. Liquid injection MOCVD of Bi-oxide films using Bi(mmp)3 indicates similar decomposition behaviour to the Sr-Ta and Sr-Nb alkoxides, demonstrating its suitability as a complementary source of Bi for SBT, SBN and SBTN.

Planar flow in the interfacial region of an open porous medium is investigated by finding solutions for Stokes flow in a channel partially filled with an array of circular cylinders beside one wall. The cylinders are in a square array oriented across the flow and are widely spaced, so that the solid volume fraction ϕ is 0.1 or less. For this spacing, singularity methods are appropriate and so they are used to find solutions for both planar Couette flow and Poiseuille flow in the open portion of the channel. The solutions, accurate to O(ϕ), are used to calculate the apparent slip velocity at the interface, Us, and results obtained for Us are presented in terms of a dimensionless slip velocity. For shear-driven flow, this dimensionless quantity is found to depend only weakly on ϕ and to be independent of the height of the array relative to the height of the channel and independent of the cylinder size relative to the height of the channel. For pressure-driven flow, Us is found to be less than that under comparable shear-flow conditions, and dependent on cylinder size and filling fraction in this case. Calculations also show that the external flow penetrates the porous medium very little, even for sparse arrays, and that Us is about one quarter of the velocity predicted by the Brinkman model.
